I am a former therapist, well acquainted with family systems theory so I found this book a wonderful addition to the understanding of patterns carried forward in families, and ways to heal them. I highly recommend for anyone working out issues they do not understand and getting to the bottom of where they originated in their family. I learned so much about what came from my mother and grandmother in particular. This is a deep work and outstanding contribution to healing at any level, whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. The exercises are of immeasurable value.

An interested book that helped me to have few insight moments. In my case I have previously read many books on mystical or spiritual subjects as well as New Age subjects, however this is the first time I came across the science to acknowledge the link between our family and our behavior. I am not sure if this is the right book to help somebody who was horrible abused by a close family member. Regarding other family past issues this book will help us to find answers to some of our dramas. Plenty of exercises to do.

As a weekend workshop attendee 4 months ago and now devoted fan of Mark’s amazing work, I feel compelled to share that Mark’s teachings in the book are nothing short of astounding. His website has short, informative videos about the Family Constellation process as well as 150 testimonials to read, many of which confirm the work to be transformative and life changing. For anyone interested in why various unsettling, typically unconscious behaviors exist (including but certainly not limited to phobias, OCD, depression, hoarding, financial compromise, rejection, insomnia, procrastination, unexplained health symptoms, even hair-pulling), the reader may want to visit Mark’s website for a more in-depth look at how the tools to this approach can bring about such deep personal healing.

My life has been profoundly changed by attending Mark Wolynn’s workshops. I got curious about what had happened in my family but was never spoken about. I was finally able to make sense of a major trauma that occurred in my life when I discovered I had repeated the same trauma that had befallen my father. Literally decades of guilt and shame simply dropped from my shoulders. Out of deep love and loyalty I had accepted the same fate, but now I knew ‘it didn’t start with me.’By using Mark’s core language, which he generously shares in this book, you can uncover your own inherited trauma and start healing yourself and your family. Read this book slowly and let the language affect you. Do the exercises. This book will change you. Then start living the life you were meant to live!

If you are interested in epigenetics, definitely read this book. It has to do with psycho-emotional ‘stuff’ we get handed down from ancestors. Lots of great tales and explanations. I was totally new to this concept when I read the book and have since worked with a woman who specializes in it and who trained with the author. It is real and can really help explain the unexplainable symptoms and issues you or a loved on might have and could be the missing link you were seeking!

This book is amazing! I had a traumatic childhood and have spent my whole adulthood recovering from it. If I may say so myself, I have done pretty well up until now dealing with what I went through. I have spent time in talk therapy and group therapy which have helped me alot. I have read many books doing some of the work at home. And I am glad I did. But this book worked like magic for me! It is an easy read with many examples of how this process works. At first I was a little skeptical thinking it was a little too voodooish, but boy was I wrong! The process it took me through was gentle, and easy to do, and the next thing I knew…..bam! I hit on a huge revelation and was relieved of decades worth of pent up anger (that I didn’t even realize was still strong) toward my father. The past work i did seemed somewhat laborious and felt like “work” but this one just unfolded everything for me. I felt such peace after doing the exercises on the core stuff that I was almost giddy! I am not exaggerating. Please read this and do the simple exercises. It worked for me, and I was skeptical.

I am deeply touched by Mark’s book and happy to highly recommend it. He has found an inspiring way to share his personal life’s experiences, those of clients he has worked with over the past 20 years and scientific research to create a smooth read, easy to follow exercises and a format, which really works to help one shine light into one’s own life and that of one’s family to bring forth subconscious patterns, which have been blocking one’s healing and forward movement. I’ve been working with clients for the past decade and have experienced quite a few growth opportunities of my own. This book came to me synchronistically as I had been searching for a core wound to heal my relationship with my elderly mother and it was Mark’s clear path throughout his book, his vulnerability sharing his own struggles and the questions and healing statements he shared, which gifted me not only the clarity of the wound that I have been looking for for years, but also the tools to heal it.

This is an ‘eye-opening’ book, well worth reading by those who have suffered emotionally and psychologically from problems that seem to be insurmountable. As a therapist, the main idea of this book – that the painful and debilitating emotions we harbor think are our own may have been passed on to us from our ancestors – was new to me; however, after reading the book I’ve been able to help many patients gain relief from anxiety, depression, and an overwhelming sense of grief… just by helping them examine their family history. Whether you, the reader, are a therapist as well, or someone who has suffered emotionally in the past, reading this book will give you a sense of hope, at the very least…

While reading It Didn’t Start With You, I could not help but feel like Mark Wolynn was handing us readers that ever-elusive puzzle piece on a silver platter. In this case, the piece that ties together science, soul, and the shared familial bond that spans generations with something equally transcending – language.Mark’s core language approach demonstrates that he has mastered what many professionals have only grazed – and that is the ability to listen – to truly hear what is coming through from the often unexposed crevices deep within. That the book could provide such an easy to follow process to enlighten all of us on a healing journey should come as no surprise, since again, Wolynn’s mastery of language communicates his accessible and helpful therapeutic methods with the same ease as if he is confidently taking his charge’s hands to guide them safely and securely across the street. It Didn’t Start With You is transformational. Mark Wolynn’s contribution will prove pivotal in the field of inherited family trauma.

Definitely a great book, I’ve had to digest it slowly because there are “stop points” asking you to complete exercises and really apply the material. This is the best kind of self-help book, in my opinion. I would say you have to be ready to face these things and it is most definitely not a light read. But for me, a necessary and timely one.
