9 Ways to Effectively Argue
1. Tone – A respectful and calm tone is always best during a dialogue
2. Delivery – It’s not what you say that matters as much as HOW you say it.
3. Timing – Is what you are saying absolutely needed right now or can it wait. If the exchange is with a loved one did you ask if this was a good time to bring up the subject?
4. Pause – If you need to take a pause/break to calm yourself before continuing a dialogue that will always have better outcomes. This is a sign of strength, not weakness.
5. Choose Your battles – If you choose to fight about everything than you are constantly fighting about nothing. Choosing your battles also helps others take your concerns more seriously.
6. Use the When You, I Feel, I’d Prefer method (see youtube video)
7. Use the Mirror Technique (see youtube video)
8. Stop and Reflect – After your dialogue go for a walk or journal. Meditate/pray about the exchange and see what you can learn from it.
9. Learn to agree to disagree – By concentrating on any elements that you agree with, it softens others’ reactions.
